This course has been running for a number of years and gives advanced-level students with an interest in reading and literature the opportunity to read and discuss literary texts from a variety of periods and genres.
No specialist knowledge of literature is required and the emphasis is on speaking and exchanging ideas in English with reference to some extracts from literary texts. There will also be from time to time some discussion of brief texts related to interesting items in the news and current affairs, especially those connected with cultural issues.
While the course is not a “standard”language course, there will be a little space for brief focus on language questions of interest that arise, especially with reference to vocabulary extension and to pronunciation difficulties. Some of the themes to be discussed this year, all with reference to (mainly British) literature in English and from a general and non-specialist viewpoint, are:
- “classical” and “romantic” literature in English
- “historical” classifications (eg. “Elizabethan”,“Victorian”, etc.)
- Shakespeare and his language
- representations of Italy and Italians in literature in English in the nineteenth century
- literature and politics
- “Women’s writing”
In order to participate effectively, course members should have a good advanced (post-FCE) knowledge of English and be willing to do some reading of short literary extracts between lessons.
